Small Masts

HM10

The HM 10m Met Mast is specifically designed for background noise studies. The addition of a Second Wind anemometer, NRG windvane and our standard Campbell Scientific logger enclosure gives a reliable cost effective solution.

HM12,18

The HM 12m and 18m options are designed for the smaller turbine sites, wind prospecting or long term wind speed predictions on LIDAR sites. The standard masts are supplied with either Second Wind, NRG or Vector anemometers and wind vanes. Our standard Campbell Scientific logger enclosure supports logging of temperature and humidity data if required.

WMI's shelter analysis allows state-of-the-art extrapolation of long term wind speeds to heights well above mast height, allowing development of cost sensitive projects, minimising up front risk and uncertainty.

The complete mast, including packing, instrumentation, booms, ground anchors and manual drive rod is available for purchase or hire. Mast only kits are also available.

The met mast is constructed from T6 tempered aluminium mast tubes, chosen for their light weight, frequency response, lifetime and high strength. The small diameter minimises wind and ice loading, which in turn reduces the required holding strength of the ground anchors. The met mast tubes are coupled together using precision machined internal aluminium pins which increase the allowable buckling load.

The base plate is laser cut and folded from galvanised steel plate. The guy connection points (spiders) are laser cut and formed under numerical control from stainless steel plate. Booms for the anemometers and wind vane are constructed from folded aluminium sheet and stainless steel tubes to meet IEC wind monitoring standards and keep installation as simple as possible. All external cables are UV established and shielded to ensure long life and minimum electromagnetic interference. Brackets to locate the photo voltaic panel and logger enclosure are laser cut and formed from aluminium sheet to provide simple, hassle-free installation. The IP65 logger enclosure contains a CR200 Campbell Scientific logger, 3.3 Ah battery, GSM modem and a signal conditioning unit.

Industry standard Second Wind anemometers and NRG windvanes are supplied in a protective Aluminium flight case. Measnet calibrated NRG anemometers are available on request.

All data logging equipment, including the PV panel and mobile phone antenna, are supplied pre-wired as above and only require connection of the anemometers and wind vanes to complete the system.

The mast is rated to withstand 45 m/s wind speeds under no ice conditions. (British Standards recommend 30 m/s as the maximum in the UK). The mast is rated to withstand 30 m/s under conditions of 12.5 mm of uniform icing around the mast tubes and guys (273 kgf anchor load, including appropriate safety factors).

Critical load bearing components have been designed using numerical stress analysis to ensure a quality design for minimal cost. Frequency response to vortex shedding is a standard part of WMI's design process.
