In 2008, an in depth analysis by the European Commission concluded that "well-adapted feed-in tariff regimes are generally the most efficient and effective support schemes for promoting renewable electricity".
The income wind turbine owners receive from the tariff varies widely from country to country. In general, they provide a guaranteed rate of income over a long period that aims to reflect the cost of renewable energy generation.
